Porthleven is a lovely fishing port just off the A394, it is the most southerly fishing port in the UK with a picturesque harbour, it’s easy to see why so many people love it. The town is well known for its famous storm scenes and is a popular destination for storm watching. Parking can be a bit tricky in the busier months and motorhome parking is not easy at all. If you’d like to visit we recommend you park in the car park near the boating lake in nearby Helston in the Fair Car Park which is free and catch the bus. The bus stop is near the boating lake. If the car parks are full in Porthleven or you’d like a walk in to the town which will take you about 20 minutes (some of this walk is along a road so not suitable for wheelchairs and pushchairs), park in the Penrose National Trust car park. This car park is not suitable for motorhomes as it is on a slope and quite small. Porthleven is definitely a great place to visit and has plenty of lovely places to eat, galleries and small shops for you to browse. You can easily spend a couple of hours here. Right in the middle of Porthleven there’s a pretty, traditional fishing harbour. It is the most southerly working port in the United Kingdom. The harbour comprises two harbours: the inner and outer. During stormy weather the inner harbour is protected with wooden sleepers/baulks placed between the harbour walls stopping the surging sea from entering the inner harbour. However, in February 2014 the storms were so powerful they smashed the sea defences pounding the boats in the inner harbour resulting in 10 boats being sunk. Storm watching (from a safe distance) is really popular in Porthleven seeing the waves crash so violently on shore and cliffs, one of the most favourite photo shots is to see the waves crash over the church. The harbour is surrounded by shops, cafes, pubs, restaurants and bars there is something for everyone. Spend a while walking round, taking the views across Mounts Bay and sample some local pasties.
